Britannia Leisure Centre
Hackney Council were determined to provide high-quality leisure facilities for local people and are investing in a new centre that will provide better modern facilities for the Hackney residents for years to come.

The award winning Britannia development is a complex masterplan development, including a new flagship leisure centre, school and 481 residential units.

The delivery of the new residential accommodation has been developed to help cross fund the new school and leisure centre as well as extensive improvements to Shoreditch Park including a new public square.

The existing Britannia Leisure Centre was becoming increasingly expensive to maintain, regularly needed patching up or sections temporarily closing, and had facilities which were outdated.

The design development of the new leisure centre and masterplan was informed by extensive consultation with project stakeholders including Sport England, sports clubs and residents of Hackney.

The new leisure centre includes a six-lane 25m main pool and training pool, both with moveable floors. Exciting with water features and flumes are provided for children and families.

Dry side facilities include six-court sports hall, crèche and soft play area, sauna and steam room, large fitness suite, spin studio and flexible studio spaces and four squash courts. Uniquely there are two five-a-side pitches and two tennis/netball courts on the roof of the building.

By stacking the leisure centre this freed up more of the site and maximised the cross-funding potential of adjacent residential development.

Challenging energy efficiency targets were set by the client. This was achieved with innovative building systems and a central energy centre.

Early engagement with the Planning Officers and Design Review Panel, as well as Highways, was essential to inform the design of the project.

Early contractor involvement was carefully managed to ensure quality was not compromised, whilst allowing engagement with utilities to progress network enhancements to meet the project programme.

“Hadron and the design team were specifically picked to ensure we delivered a world class leisure scheme as part of Britannia masterplan. They have worked incredibly well as a team, taking significant site and project constraints in their stride. I am very proud of what we are collectively achieving and would recommend this team to anyone embarking on a project of a similar nature.”
