Woolwich Leisure Centre
During public consultation more than 2,300 people shared their views on the design on the new leisure centre through online surveys, focus groups and public workshops.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich is embarking on a complex mixed-use development in central Woolwich.
The development includes a new leisure centre, refurbishment and integration of an existing locally listed theatre and around 480 new residential units, including affordable units. The residential units will part-fund the development of the leisure centre and theatre.

The leisure centre includes a 25m competition pool and training pool, both with moveable floors, extensive leisure water, with water features and flumes, spa, six-court sports hall, squash courts, four large exercise studios, soft play, creche and café.

A central energy centre provides a heat network to the whole site. Two existing sub-stations have been relocated and complex off-site utility reinforcement works completed.

Planning is particularly sensitive as it involved high rise buildings and the part demolition of a local listed public house, which wasn’t fully compliant with GLA and local planning policy. Early engagement with the local planning officers, GLA and other key stakeholders was critical to this.

The leisure centre contractor was appointed early in the design process to provide buildability and programme input for this complicated project. This was particularly important given that the site is constrained by the surrounding roads and one of the busiest transport interchanges in London adjacent to the site.

By stacking the leisure centre this maximises the space available for the residential development. The centre will be very sustainable with a BREEAM Excellent rating.

The Hadron team has been involved from the initial feasibility stages and is now responsible for overseeing the delivery of the construction phase.

“We were delighted to appoint Hadron Consulting as part of the consultant team. Their work provided clear recommendations and allowed the Council to make informed decisions. We are now starting to see the benefits of this advice, having completed the enabling phases, the Tramshed, and now the leisure centre build phase. I have been so impressed with the team, and their commitment to the project and would recommend them to anyone embarking on something similar.” Jeremy Smalley, Deputy Director of Regeneration & Property Royal Borough of Greenwich
